Deaths reported as bus plunges into ravine near Malaysian resort - Globe and Mail

A bus carrying more than 30 passengers plunged into a deep ravine Wednesday near a Malaysian highland resort area, killing an unknown number of people, an official said.

The bus fell more than 30 metres into the ravine while travelling downhill, said an official from the Fire and Rescue Department in the central Genting Highlands district.

Rescuers brought out injured survivors, but some passengers were dead, the official said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to make public statements. He said it was not clear how many passengers had survived and how many had been killed.

Bentong town police chief Mohamad Mansor Nor said he had no immediate details about the identities of the passengers on the bus.

Genting Highlands features Malaysia's only legal casino, which attracts thousands of domestic visitors and foreign tourists from Singapore and China every week. Serious accidents are rare on the relatively well-maintained roads leading to the area's main resorts.
