MOE gives out 202 teaching scholarships and awards this year - TODAYonline

SINGAPORE - The Education Ministry has given out 202 teaching scholarships and awards this year.

The recipients will be heading to overseas and local universities to pursue degrees and postgraduate degrees in a range of subjects, including geography and music.

At the presentation ceremony, Education Minister Heng Swee Keat told recipients the ministry will give them all the support to help them build up content mastery and teaching skills.

He added that a teacher is not just a content expert of his subject but also a shaper of culture, values and young lives.

Mr Heng said Singapore society holds teachers in high regard and expects them to be role models.

"I have a little suggestion for you as you head off to school. Make full use of your early start to build a strong foundation in your chosen discipline. Break old mindsets and build new friendships," he urged the scholarship and award recipients.

"Be the engaged learner that you hope your future students will be. Search out the inspirational teachers, learn from them, ask them hard questions, push them to develop themselves further. And as you begin a new journey, do not lose touch with your schools - your former teachers will feel great pride in watching you grow," Mr Heng said. CHANNEL NEWSASIA
