Thousands Watch Singapore National Day Parade - Bernama

SINGAPORE, Aug 10 (Bernama) -- Thousands of Singaporeans from all walks of life gathered Friday night to watch the 48th National Day parade at The Float@Marina Bay, a floating platform.

President Tony Tan Keng Yam inspected the parade as a gun salute was fired. Other dignitaries present included Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean and Cabinet ministers, former Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew and Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong.

A highlight of the parade was an aerial flypast by the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) fighter aircraft.

However, one of the most sought-after shows, a jump display by the Red Lions parachute team of the RSAF, was called off due to low cloud cover. The jump was supposed to have featured the republic's first woman participant.

Thirty-one contingents, including uniformed groups, social organisations and companies, took part in the parade.
